Abstract
Treatment principle concerning avascular necrosis of the femoral head has not established yet except that strict non-weight bearing attitude should be adhered to until complete restitution of the dead bone occurs.
In an attempt to clarify this problem, experimental production of this condition was tried to the femoral head of the rabbit and histological and radiological observation with the
sequence of the time was done with the following results.
1. Rate of occurrence of avascular necrosis was 6016, 16 out of 25 cases, appearing as
increased density on X-ray study between three to six weeks after ligation.
2. Postero-lateral approach to hip was found to be convenient for exposing and ligatiogg the
femoral neck in the rabbit, with least damage to soft tissue.
3. Definite ischemic change could be found at 6 hours after ligation and after 24 hours
these, mainly in the endosteum and marrow cavity, seemed to become irreversible.
4. Woven bone appeared at three to six weeks of ligation and during this period the
radiological demonstration was possible as the definite increased density.
